A few hours a month, from your sofa

The online Muslim volunteer: helping from home

Mosques and small charities need designers, writers and moderators as much as helping hands.

Why online help matters

Small teams, big jobs. Many mosques and small charities run on volunteers who have no time left for their website, posters or social media. A few hours a month from someone with these skills helps them reach many more people.

You can sponsor an orphan and see each month’s support. See the biggest Muslim charities in the UK and what they spend.

What you can do

Pick one and offer it.

  • Design: posters for events, in the organisation’s own style.
  • Writing: event descriptions, newsletters, website pages.
  • Video: short clips of events, with everyone’s permission.
  • Translation: notices in the languages your community speaks.
  • Moderation: keeping comments respectful on a mosque’s pages.

Doing it well

Good manners travel online too.

  • Say only what is true: the Quran tells believers to verify news before acting on it (Quran 49:6).
  • Say good or keep silent, in comments as anywhere (Sahih al-Bukhari 6018).
  • Protect people’s privacy: no photos of children without permission, and never personal details.
  • Look after yourself: take breaks, and step away from arguments.
